Rice (Non Basmati)

Long Grain

This Paddy is mostly grown in Eastern & Central Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Chattisgarh, Raipur &Gondia Area. Originally, this was the prime product of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka but now such hybrids are available in Northern Indian Belts also. Similar Rice from Pakistan is called IRRI-6 and Thai Broken Rice.

This Paddy is mostly grown in Plains of Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab Area. Originally, But now such hybrids are available in Northern Indian Belts such as Western Uttar Pradesh, also. Similar Rice from Pakistan is called IRRI-9 and Thai Long Grain Rice.

This is the sister crop of PR -11 and a bit longer in grain size and mostly eaten in the Parboiled form. Again the paddy is of North India mostly Punjab, Haryana and is used as a cheap substitute to mix with Basmati.

This is the sister crop of IR 64 and a bit longer in grain size than IR 64 and mostly eaten in the Parboiled form. Again the paddy is of North India mostly Punjab, Haryana and is used for Govt. PDS Supplies and for feeding the poor.

Medium Grain

This grain of rice is exclusive to India and is not grown anywhere in Asia. This is mostly grown in Orissa, West Bengal, Assam, Eastern Bihar, Jharkhand and Southern Uttar Pradesh region. The grain length is key to this rice.

Basmati Rice

India is Patented for the use of "Basmati". The long grain aroma is unique to the Basmati rice grown here. However, that is only for Traditional Basmati Rice. The Hybrid varieties developed by PUSA such as 1121, 1509 and PUSA rice are long grain but do not have the aroma of the Traditional Basmati Rice.
